What keeps data centers ticking? A total control of the environment that allows systems admins to monitor and manage servers, as well as other network equipment to securely manage the entire power infrastructure regardless of location, should probably do the trick.
And that is exactly what Server Technology, the experts behind esteemed power monitoring solutions, and Opengear (News - Alert), which delivers feature rich solutions for remote infrastructure management, are working to do, having jointly revealed a complete remote access cellular solution including both power and out-of-band management (OOB).
The combined offering reportedly integrates control of Server Technology's (News - Alert) smart power distribution unit (PDU) product line with Opengear's infrastructure management solutions.
"Power is a key element of remote management. Combining Server Technology's power solutions with cellular out-of-band access from Opengear provides total control of the environment," commented Rick Stevenson, CEO of Opengear in a statement.
This means that systems administrators can control power using Opengear's integrated cellular technology, as well as exercise complete control over the equipment that is connected to Opengear devices.
However, that’s not all, as many other common network management challenges can apparently be resolved by the joint solution. Network and systems administrators can maintain complete control with true out-of-band management and easily provision, deploy and maintain remote infrastructure with on-site preventive maintenance and health monitoring. This will help to minimize downtime considerably.
Additionally, by offering an easy way to remotely shutdown devices, the joint solution will reduce power consumption. Furthermore, SMS and Web-initiated custom local actions will assist in improving infrastructure efficiency with smart M2M auto response and elevation.
“Not only does the solution provide power control directly, the solution is self aware, allowing devices to take action based on a user defined "rule book," which now includes the option to power cycle individual or all of Server Technology's Smart PDUs," observed Calvin Nicholson, senior director of software and firmware at Server Technology in said statement.
